Mesa, Arizona; One of the very few cities in the United States, occupied by people of all shapes and colors. Some of us are social butterflies, loving the spotlight. Others have shaded eyes, holding guilt within them that we just cannot be rid of. Yet we all have just one thing in common... our past.
We started out as native americans. We knew this land since our ancestors roamed the soils, and we do not know how they came to be here. We just know that this is simply how it is. There was no Pilgrim or Englishman who came to this country. It was just us. It will always be just us. As you know quite well, we were raised in tribes. We were raised with our mothers, with shamans, with arrows, spears, tepees and moccasins. This was the way of life. Those who were born were praised and adored. Those who were grown were cherished for their additions to the tribe. But we never respected any one being more than we respected our ancestors.
It is our firm belief that once one has died, they Rise. We do not believe in Heaven; we simply believe that they Rise. They Rise into the animal that most represented their lives. One might be a bear, fierce to guard those he loves. Another might be an eagle, well respected and noble. A mother might Rise to be a deer, gentle and forgiving. But whatever animalistic shape they took on, we honored them nonetheless.
There was a time when we tired of our ways though. Digging up roots, spending days on end hunting down just one furtive elk... it all gets rather time consuming. As the Englishman grew creative in your history, we grew creative in ours. We caught and tamed horses, built larger and more suitable homes out of clay and rock. We furnished more concealing clothes, and created stylish boots and high-heel shoes. We all proudly refer to this change as becoming civilized. And we are civilized.
But that is not what our dear ancestors preferred. They wanted us to respect the ways of the old times. They punished us for our happiness, for our inventions and new-found intelligence. They cursed us.
We are half of what we used to be, and half of what the ancestors desired for us to stay loyal to. We are half human, and half animal. We are abominations.
